Once generated in power plants, electricity passes through transmission substations and distribution substations to reach us.
Today, we will look at the structure of the power industry that encompasses the entire process, from power generation to sales.
The power industry refers to an industry that produces electric energy and sells it to consumers through transmission and distribution.
Due to the peculiarity that storage is impossible and supply must always be kept larger than demand, a power company is required to stably control the power generation and transmission facilities once the power is generated. We also need an institution that can manage purchases and sales while knowing the peculiarities of this electricity.
To satisfy these requirements, Korea has been dividing roles and sharing the power industry structure of the power generation sector and power market operation, power system operation, transmission grid operation, and sales since 2001.
Power generation | KHNP and affiliates
These companies generate electricity using thermal power, nuclear power, and hydropower. KHNP(Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Company) and its five affiliate companies are responsible for more than 70% of the power generation in Korea. The remaining power generation is handled by private power generators and regional electricity providers. The regional electricity business is the same as the previous generation companies in that it produces electricity, but it has a power generation facility capacity of less than a certain scale and supplies it directly to electricity users without going through the power market.
Power system operation | KPE
It is the overall monitoring and control of power systems leading to generation, transmission and distribution, and sales. Along with the operation of the power market, the KPE(Korea Power Exchange) is in charge. Electricity demand refers to all power facilities, such as power plants, transmission, substation, and distribution, as the power system. The process of stably supplying high-quality power by adjusting the flow of power according to the demand that changes according to the season and time, maintaining the prescribed frequency and voltage, and managing the factors that cause the failure of power facilities are all power processes. It can be said that it is the operation of the system.
Transmission Operation | KEPCO
It refers to sending electricity made at a power plant and purchased from a power exchange to a substation. Korea Electric Power Corporation is playing this role. KEPCO is also carrying out a distribution process that transfers electricity from substations to consumers. In Korea, the power system is isolated, and electricity production is mainly concentrated in the southeastern region, and consumption is concentrated in the metropolitan area. Therefore, a transmission network is required for long-distance, large-capacity power transportation.
Ion Exchange Resins for Power Plants | Samyang TRILITE
Power plant water treatment systems extend the lifespan by minimizing scaling and deposits in their system. Better environmental practices and long-term cost-effectiveness should be realized. Samyang Corporation, as the only manufacturer of ion exchange resins in Korea, supplies quality ion exchange resins to the most of local power plants in Korea, for boiler feed water systems, condensate polishing, and cooling water treatment.
Years of experience we have in this industry, and the supply of quality ion exchange resins to KNHP and KEPCO. Samyang Corporation is the essential partner for the electricity industry development.
